February 10, 2010

Kruzenshtern Russian Tall ShipNorth Vancouver, BC - The City of North Vancouver will welcome the Russian tall ship, the Kruzenshtern, on Wednesday, February 10th, 2010. The Kruzenshtern will moor at the City's Burrard Drydock Pier, on the Lower Lonsdale Waterfront for the duration of the Olympic Games, until February 28th.

The Kruzenshtern is a 114.5 metre, four-masted Russian barque and tall ship, built in 1926 in Germany and is based in Kalingrad. The 84 year old vessel houses a crew of 220 and is expected to offer public tours during its stay.

Mayor Darrell Mussatto, Members of Council and other community representatives will welcome the ship on the morning of February 11th, officially greeting the ship's captain and crew.

The Kruzenshtern was given to the USSR in 1946 as war reparation and renamed after the early 19th century Baltic German explorer in Russian service, Adam Johann Kruzenshtern. The Kruzenshtern is one of the tallest sailing ships in the world with a height of over 51 meters.
