With its lively cabarets and cultural life, Paris in the late 19th century witnessed an extraordinary flourishing of the arts. Many women now left the confines of the home to take on new identities as professional artists, and many art schools in Paris, such as the Académie Julian, were expressly set up to train female artists.This is part one of a series of three lectures will trace the work of some of the leading women artists of this period, notably Rosa Bonheur, Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot and Camille Claudel.
