Plans Now Underway for 2010 Torch Relay and North Vancouver Celebration Site

The District of North Vancouver and community partners are developing plans to ensure that the 2010 Torch Relay and Celebration event are major attractions for locals and visitors alike. The relay will arrive on the North Shore February 10, 2010 just two days prior to the opening ceremonies.

As the relay comes through Lynn Valley it will stop for a two hour Celebration at the Lynn Valley Centre/Plaza area. The ceremony will include the lighting of the flame in a cauldron, entertainment, and more.

The District is spearheading the Celebration activities in conjunction with VANOC and Olympic Torch Relay sponsors Coca-Cola and Royal Bank of Canada (RBC). Volunteers will be needed to ensure the success of the event as well as the relay that will be taking place across the North Shore.

If you are interested in volunteering to assist with the 2010 Torch Relay and/or Torch Relay Celebration please sign up at 2010 Volunteer registration. Be sure to indicate that you want to participate in these North Shore events. This site is the official volunteer registration site for activities planned in conjunction with North Shore Spirit of BC.

VNSTA to Use Torch Relay "Route Community" Logo

The Olympic flame will be carried across the North Shore from the District of North Vancouver, through the City of North Vancouver and onto West Vancouver on February 10, 2010.

As a result of having all North Shore municipalities participating in the Relay, VNSTA has received permission from VANOC to use the official logo on our North Shore website. It will be uploaded in the days to come. For more information about the Relay route across the North Shore click here.

North Shore Tourism Holds Media Tour

On March 16 our PR/media relations representative, Jane Ince, held the VNSTA's first media tour. Six local women including travel writers and influencers from radio, TV, online media, Tourism BC, and Vancouver Coast and Mountains experienced "Girls Night Out" at Cypress Mountain. During the evening they toured the 2010 Olympic venue sites, then experienced an evening of snow-shoeing which included a fondue dinner at the Hollyburn Lodge. The media guests truly enjoyed themselves and are excited to work with VNSTA in future.

Our thanks to Kent Rideout and Katie Kotz at Cypress Mountain for hosting this media evening and helping to make the adventure a great success. The next media event is tentatively scheduled for May. If you wish to be included in the itinerary for local and short haul media guests, please contact Jane at jane@vancouversnorthshore.com.

New Industry Award to be Created for North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards

We Need Your Suggestions!

Vancouvers's North Shore Tourism Association plans to sponsor a tourism industry award at this year's NVCC Business Excellence Awards. In order to do so, we must create a unique category that doesn't overlap with existing ones. It must also be applicable to many tourism related businesses so that at least five firms are nominated for the award each year. Finally, we want to ensure that the category will be one that can exist for many years to come.

Business Excellence Awards and Criteria:

Awards from 2008 event included:

  • Best Business
  • Service Excellence
  • Arts & Culture
  • Young Entrepreneur
  • Business Person of the Year
  • Best Employer
  • Innovation
  • Sustainability
  • Community Contribution

If you have some fresh ideas related to a tourism industry award category please email kcampbell@vancouversnorthshore.com.

North Shore Videos Posted On Website

Working in conjunction with Shaw TV and Vancouver Coast and Mountains, VNSTA recently developed a new winter activities video to promote the North Shore. The video aired on Shaw TV's Express program in March and will also appear again in April. We have now uploaded it to our website. Take a look by clicking here.

In addition, West Vancouver created an Olympic related video. You can view it as well by clicking on 2010 Olympics and scrolling to the bottom of the page.

New Tourism Map in Development

We are currently developing a new map with the assistance of Mike Lakin and his team at Davenport Maps in Victoria. The list of tourism attractions, activities, hotels, transportation and tour operators, plus other relevant information has been compiled. The work would not have been possible without the assistance of many of you. In addition, Misha Wilson, Manager of the Visitor Centres has been a major help in the development of the content for the new map. Thank you all!

Davenport is well known for its map making expertise. They have worked with many other BC destination marketing organizations including Tourism Langley, Tourism Surrey, Tourism Richmond as well as Tourism BC. While there remains a lot of work to be done before completion, the map is scheduled for delivery prior to the summer season.
