Five Ways to Enjoy Salmon Season

August 15, 2018 |

There is no better place to see the spectacle of the salmon season than Vancouver’s North Shore. From Fall to Winter you can watch the magnificence of this pink-hued fish jumping and swimming upstream. But, there are so many ways to learn about, see, and taste this legendary fish! Why not plan a weekend with a salmon theme to catch this epic event, or try one of these activities below:

1. Capilano Salmon Hatchery

A popular FREE attraction, the Capilano Salmon Hatchery hosts 400,000 visitors every year. Visitors flock to the hatchery to learn about the lifecycle of our local fishy friends and see salmon in the Fishway where they jump from one pool to the next.

2. Coho Festival

The Coho Festival is held every September at Ambleside Park in West Vancouver. The festival promotes ways to protect and preserve our environment while celebrating the miracle of salmon returning to North Shore rivers and streams. Join the celebration this September 9th with the live entertainment, Coho kids area, and the famous Salmon BBQ.

3. Salmon Fishing

Within 20 minutes of West Vancouver’s Horseshoe Bay you can find a variety of fishing spots where at the right time of year you can find Chinook, Coho, Pinks, and Sockeye salmon. To find the best fishing locations, take a guided fishing charter from Sewell’s Marina with an experienced guide who knows the area like the back of their hand!

4. Eat a Fresh Salmon Dinner

There are many places to try fresh, local salmon on the North Shore but the Salmon House on the Hill has to be one of the most unique. Enjoy indigenous West Coast cuisine of wild sockeye salmon, in a variety of ways, while sitting in the window-wrapped dining room that offers an unparalleled view of Vancouver and Burrard Inlet.

5. Take a Spawning Salmon Tour

Takaya Tours, owned by Tsleil-Waututh Nation, offers a spawning salmon tour from mid-August to mid-November. The trained guides will take you for a salmon experience you will never forget. You will be led through the ancestral trails along the Indian Arm River banks where the fish pools are while taking in local wildlife and hearing about the sacred and respected fish and the West Coast First Nations of British Columbia.
