Capilano Salmon Hatchery, North VancouverThe Capliano Salmon Hatchery is located on the Capilano River in Capilano River Regional Park. With over 400,000 visitors annually, the Capilano Hatchery is a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. Great news for your budget too, as admission to this popular attraction is free.

Bring a camera, hiking shoes and picnic if you desire. You easily can spend a couple of hours here.

Don't miss this remarkable fish hatchery interpretive centre and self-guided tour. Learn about and see fish develop from eggs to juvenile stage, when they are released to the river in spring. It's a colourful and fascinating process. Within the park, there are many hiking trails and a picnic area. You don't have to walk very far to small local bridges, where during spawning season you can see the bright red fish jump and fight their way upstream.

Fish Ladder at the Capilano Salmon Hatchery in North VancouverDepending on the season, you may see juvenile salmon and trout in the display aquaria or mature returning salmon in the fish ladder. Be sure to visit the "Fishway" in the observation gallery. Here you can see how salmon climb the fish ladders by jumping from one pool to the next. It's truly exciting for children and adults alike!  Coho salmon return to the Hatchery over a long period lasting from June and December.

Capilano Road north (Capilano Road exit from Highway #1 or North Vancouver exit off Lions Gate Bridge, then left up Capilano Road) .5 km past the Suspension Bridge. Turn left on to Capilano Park Road (Look for sign "Capilano River Regional Park") and proceed down 1 km to end of the road. Note: you cannot turn right onto Capilano Park Road from southbound Capilano Road.

If you are taking transit just tell the driver where you want to get off, and be prepared for the 1km walk from the bus stop to the Hatchery.
